I saw My Super Ex-Girlfriend today. Technically it was a MeetINOrangeCounty event, but since it was just me, I don’t know that it really counts. It was their loss though, as it receives 4 out of 5 small biohazard symbols, which I don’t feel like making, so I’ll just use stars **** and honestly, no matter how the fit with the theme of my site, biohazard symbols are not something one immediately thinks of as more being better than less.

The first half had the audience laughing frequently, good lines, good visual humor, and Luke Wilson’s lack of expression range worked well.
The second half was fairly predictable, but it still had it’s funny parts, and things that I didn’t entirely expect, although they make sense after seeing them.

In other news, work was interesting today due to the power being out when I got there, which is not really a good thing since all the experiments require power for heating and keeping things in motion. The power came back up about 20 mintues after I got there, so I spent some time getting things turned back on and checking on experments. It doesn’t look like anything too bad happened, except that the airconditioning in the lab never came back on, so it was around 85F by mid-morning. That’s sure to be fun this week, I think we got into the 90s last year when it was broken, and it wasn’t this hot out.

Short week and lots of exercise

Scott wrote this in the late afternoon:

So, on Sunday it was “Help Melody Move Day.” It seemed to go without much trouble, there were at times as many as 15 people helping. Or maybe not so much helping as being there, but at least there were enough people around for the various heavy appliances. It’s a good looking place, two bedrooms, 1 bath, nice big living room and kitchen, detached studio with it’s own kitchen and bathroom for massage use, fenced in back yard and a front yard. I’m a bit jealous. Apparently something fell on me at some point because I appear to have some bruises along one arm by my shoulder.

Today there was a company picnic, so other than two hours this morning to take care of the essentials, I had the day off.

People from work

Tom, Michelle, Dali, Eva, Soon, and Francis in the back

There was food and cotton candy and, obviously, snow cones and various games, some for the children (since it was a family event) and some not. We played some volleyball and some softball. I managed to get hit in the back with the softball, it got thrown to me after I’d turned away, I don’t think it hurt me much though, probably just a circular bruise under my shoulderblade.

I spent some time trying out my new camera, a Nikon D50 DSLR with 18-55 and 55-200mm lenses. Even without being able to use the more advanced settings yet, I think I’m doing pretty well with it. Needing to swap out lenses will take some getting used to, but I love the response time on the shutter and it takes nice pictures.

There was initially some trouble in gettng the camera of the type where if you find a listing of what a digital camera online scam looks like, that’s exactly what happened. So, I cancelled that order, and with any luck it really is cancelled, but I’ll be watching my credit card just to be sure. I ended up getting it locally due to the two lens kit not being in stock anywhere reputable online. I got pretty lucky in that they happened to have the telephoto lens, but weren’t really sure why they had it since it wasn’t the one someone had paid for and they were waiting for it to come in. So I got it. Also they were running a promotion in which I got a rebate, and a 1GB SD card, and a tripod I’ll probably never use, and a carrying case that I might, but will probably look for one a bit smaller. I seem to have spent the rebate on UV filters, but it wasn’t too bad of a price, and being able to just take it home is always a plus.

In other news, my hosting company has moved me in some way that while I can still ftp things to where I always did, there is no way to access them other than by ftp. So, I had to figure out where I have to ftp to now. And if there is a picture showing, I suceeded.

My pointy-bits hurt

Scott wrote this at around evening time:

By which I, of course, mean my knees. I went our kayaking with MeetIn today, and somehow my knees managed to get sunburned. I’m fairly certain I put sunscreen on them, so maybe it was just that they were the only part of me facing up while in the kayak.

Somewhere there had been a miscommunication that lead to the rental place only saving two-person kayaks for our group, so I actually had a partner today. More precisely, I had someone who ran out of other options, but that’s close enough. Orginally I was going with mostly-new-member Juli, but then she found someone else, followed by me going with Badger, who thought Melody’s interest in sharing a kayak with me actually meant that she would, so he surrendered his spot, meanwhile Melody left with Sandarsh, and with Badger not reclaiming his spot, left new member Kathleen as the only possible option. Other than just taking the kayak out on my own, which I was very tempted to do at several points.

All-in-all it went pretty well, with definitely less effort going into the wind with tho people paddling.

In potential future events that I’ll probably never mention again: I might be going to a speed dating event if Melody can remember who it was who wanted someone to go with her to one. I make such wonderful first impressions and open up so quickly to strangers that it just can’t help but be a wonderful experience for everyone involved.
